Jade Delivers Mental Health Assemblies to Primary Schools in West Devon and Cornwall

Uncategorized Mar 29, 2024

We wanted to share some of the fantastic feedback Jade has received from her 'Reach For the Stars' assemblies with schools in Devon and Cornwall over the last month!

Jade has visited over 100 primary and secondary schools and delivered her assembly to over 35,000 students. Here is a short documentary made about Jade and her assemblies, called ‘What’s Your Story’.

Jade has ADHD and faced a huge amount of personal struggle at school, academically, socially and with her own mental health. Between the ages of 9 and 12, Jade fought to overcome severe anxiety and depression which later led to self-harming and an eating disorder. Jade overcame her challenges with the amazing support of her parents, Claire and Joel Sutton, who subsequently founded the Youth Mental Health Foundation. Alongside mental health professionals, Claire, Joel, and Jade created a free online course to guide other parents to better support a young person struggling with mental health (CLICK HERE to check out our free online course 'The Horizon Plan').

Jade's mental health recovery was also enabled through entering a natural beauty pageant where it doesn’t matter what shape or size you are, what colour hair you have, or how expensive your dress is - winners ‘claim the crown’ because they do a huge amount of work in their community, raise money for charity and become a positive role model for others.

Jade's mission today is to counteract the tween and teen mental health crisis by inspiring and empowering young people to believe in themselves and follow their dreams, whatever they may be: "I feel it is so important to destigmatise mental health and talk to young people, as this is often when problems begin. Having a clear, positive goal was the beginning of my journey and recovery."

Our assemblies and workshops aim to:

  • Improve mental health resilience and self-esteem in young people
  • Destigmatise mental health, making it easier for young people to ask for help
  • Educate young people to accept, respect and celebrate their differences and dreams
  • Increase awareness, acceptance and understanding of neurodiversity (ADHD, autism, dyslexia, etc.)

Over the last month, Jade has delivered her assembly to schools in West Devon and Cornwall, thanks to our amazing funders. We would like to say a huge THANK YOU to Cllr Tony Leech at West Devon Borough Council, and Cllr Barry Jordan at Cornwall Council for making these assemblies possible!

Here is what the schools said:

"The assembly was inspirational and motivated the children. The children were able to empathise with Jade and the mention of celebrities and their struggles with mental health was a real eye-opener for the children, that this affects everybody. I would recommend this assembly to other schools." - North Tawton Primary School.

"Jade was really good and really informative. She spoke in lots of detail about mental health in general and shared her own experiences which made it more realistic and relatable for both the children and also staff. She asked lots of questioned and got multiple answers for most of the questions which kept the children engaged." - South Tawton Primary School.

"Jade was well prepared and her slide show supported the points she was making to the children. She was honest and open about who she was and the positive and negative comments she has faced. Thank you for this - it was simple yet powerful." - Otterham CE Primary School.
