Project to adapt The Horizon Plan to better suit the black community

Introduction

A self-harming young person has a significantly increased risk of a suicide attempt. Recent research shows that about 65 percent of young people who self-harm will also be suicidal at some point and self-harm is the most significant risk factor for completed suicide (Kapur et al., 2005; Owens, Horrocks, & House, 2002).

Some of the highest rates of suicide and self-harm in the UK have been seen in Black and minority ethnic (BME) groups and South Asian women in the United Kingdom (Baldwin & Griffiths, 2009; Bhugra, Desai, & Baldwin, 1999).

An individual’s ethnic background plays a key role in understanding how to support poor mental health sufferers in the BAME community. A study into self-harm and ethnicity by the University of Birmingham expressed that due to the diversity of factors that lead people to self-harm, ‘ethnic background must be taken into consideration when treating individuals’.  It went on to suggest that care should be offered in ‘community settings’.

Youth Mental Health Foundation

Youth Mental Health Foundation is an Unincorporated Community Association with a Charitable Incorporated Organisation registration in process (ref. no. 5171845).

We recognise the valuable role a parent or carer can play in supporting their self-harming child’s recovery. The Horizon Plan online course, coaching, and community guides parents and carers to support their child’s healing and thereby significantly reduce the risk of their child moving from self-harm to suicide. Research has shown that one of the most powerful protective factors against a child moving from self-injury to suicide is a feeling of connectedness to parents.

Description of Project

YMHF plans to adapt The Horizon Plan Foundation Course, our online course and coaching to better meet and serve the black community in the UK. The work will involve collaborating with mental healthcare professionals from within and with experience of serving the black community. The project will review existing resources offered by YMHF and make any necessary changes and create new material to better suit the Black community.

YMHF owns all the equipment (video recording and editing studio and course hosting website) and has the technical expertise required to produce and publish this resource and will supply this to the project free of charge.

Promotion Plan

The resource will be described as a joint project by YMHF and a funding partner. It will be made available through the YMHF and the partner's websites and through partner organisations serving the black community.

Impact

This project will create the resource and fund online coaching for up to 500 beneficiaries, with live Zoom call support on a weekly basis, for a 6-month period.

Timescale

The project is anticipated to take one month from funding being secured to delivery.

Ownership of resulting resource for black community

YMHF will retain ownership of all materials and intellectual property. YMHF will continue to seek funding to continue delivering the project within the UK and internationally beyond this funding period.
